Surname Pollack possibly Romanian
« on: Friday 21 December 18 20:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm researching men of the Honourable Artillery Company who died in WW1.  One of these was David Sender POLLACK - he was born in London in 1896 to Oscar & Victoria POLLACK (nee Bencovici) who i think came from Romania.  Can't find any records for these people in the UK (using Ancestry).  Any suggestions appreciated.

There's an annotation that he's Jewish..

what occupation appears on the birth certificate?

Thanks.  Yes that's the man I'm interested in - it did cross my mind that he could be Jewish.

His military records mention his parents being in Romania; no idea where he was born in the UK as I can't find his parents on any UK census.

The birth registration was in Holborn.
What was his father's occupation?

A lot of Pollack /Pollock here in Liverpool - I wasn't aware it was a Romanian name ?
ADDED
I have just been on www.familysearch.org and put in POLLACK - Liverpool - residence 1851 - 1881 and there are quite a few born Ireland and Scotland - which would suggest to me it is  Gaelic origin ?

an example
JOHN POLLACK age 40 b Ireland, widower Porter, visitor to the household
1851 Census
Dolling Street Toxteth Park West Derby RD

Have a trawl through these and see if anything is relevant - 577 results for Pollack United Kingdom - if you see a Green Tree on its own you can open that up and read the tree - rootspoint is also free to read - any others are pay per view

You have posted David Sender Pollack but his birth registration says David Bender Pollack.

David Bender Pollack birth registered Jun qtr 1896 Holborn RD vol 1b p 647

Could the war graves commision have made a mistake by puttin David Sender Pollack ?

ADDED
I wonder if Victoria died and Oscar married again ?
