marriage lookup huddersfield parish records
« on: Saturday 22 December 18 12:00 GMT (UK) »
If anybody has access to Huddersfield parish records, I would be very grateful if you could give me any further details about the marriage of John Sutcliffe and Esther Quarmby, Huddersfield, Q2 1867. Parish unknown. I'm trying to find out more about Esther, without success. She claims to be from Dover in Kent, (as does her daughter Harriett) but this does not check out at all.
Many thanks

As daughter Henrietta Quarmby bn c1862 Dover was stepdaughter to John Sutcliffe have you looked for an earlier marriage for Esther

Henrietta is a mistranscription. It's Harriett. Yes I've looked for an earlier marriage and not found it. It's odd because Quarmby is a very localised name to the Huddersfield area, so it confuses the issue even further if they are from Dover. But there is no Harriett or Esther Quarmby birth registered in Dover or anywhere else for that matter, at the right time.
If I could find which parish the marriage took place in I could visit the library and look up the marriage in the parish records on microfiche. It might give a father's name for Esther, which would help.

The original census entry does read Henrietta so not mistranscribed at that point  :)

The marriage locator suggests it may be registry office

She's Harriett in all other census entries and also in the 1939 register. So I assume they are all correct and the Henrietta one is incorrect. That's how I see it anyway. But maybe I ought to be looking for Henrietta instead perhaps? I've gone round in circles so much I don't know where to look any more.

She may have been a bit easier to find if she was Henrietta  ;D   ;D    Esther is consistent with her place of birth as Dover after her marriage to John isn't she.

It does look from the marriage locator as though you may have to purchase the marriage certificate if it is register office unless it can be found in non conformist registers.

It's looking at the moment that Esther was never married to 'Mr' Quarmby and consequently dau. Harriet's birth (if registered) would be in Esther's maiden name which, of course, we don't know.

Harriet Quarmby married a Joseph Copley in 1882 but, as with Esther, details of the marriage do not appear to be online so don't know what Christian name is given for her father.

Seems like both marriages are crucial in establishing a) Esther's maiden name and b) full name of Harriet's father who presumably died 1862-1867 probably in Huddersfield.

Have you got Harriet's exact date of birth to know which likely quarter her birth was registered?
