The general opinion is that anything written in red, blue or green ink was the work of NHS employees.

The 1939 register was used by the NHS as a means of recording information about people and giving everyone reference numbers.  Probably a rather more basic number than is used today.

The likelihood of finding out what all these notations mean is somewhat remote. They obviously mean something to the NHS but not to us unfortunately.  ::)

Some of the notations are dates when a woman married so can be useful from that point of view.

Was just thinking its not the year of death - but they were ill around that time (1985) so was wondering if it could have been c for cancer and 85 for 1985?

The only way you would know if it was cancer is to obtain the death certificate.  You could spend a lot of time trying to guess what all the notations mean.

The NHS also indicated any name changes when a woman married as well as the marriage date.

The majority of the NHS information is on the right hand side of the register which is the bit that has not been transcribed and not visible.  Due to lack of space some of this information ended up on the left hand side which is what we can see.

Highly unlikely to be c for cancer.

The administrators would not know the cause of illness or death.

Take a look at any 1939 Register page, you will see plenty of words/letters with no meaning to Joe public.

At random I have found - Winifred E Powell (crossed through) Green (crossed through) Escott then Savory (the latter in green ink, indicating marriage) Born 8 Jan 1913
EC1A BD 22 6 67 (green ink), M/B/A/26 11 47

Looking through marriage records -
Winifred E Powell or Green married Reginald V Escott Dec Q 1947.
Winifred E Escott married George D Savory Jun Q 1960 (not 1967)

But what the letters mean is anybody's guess, but highly unlikely to be anything to do with illnesses.
