Hello

Ernest Hartley is one of 305 men who worked for the Board of Trade in London in WW1 and is named on the war memorial. We have traced all the names and found 103 photos of the men. Sadly Ernest Hartley remains one of only 3 men where we can't locate his birth details or find him in a census.

I know he was a Private in the Civil Service Rifles who died on 30 June 1917. His regimental Nos were 532121 and 4781 and he enlisted at Somerset House in London, England.

I also know from his probate that he lived at 36 Sussex Street, Warwick Square, London.

He is named on Panel 54 of YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Executors on death are named as Samuel Hartley, William Hartley and Frederick Hartley.

Can someone help to identify his birth and family details?

Totally stumped. Thanks

Ed Osborne

Interesting.  As you have probably identified, he was not at 36 Sussex St in 1911.  These would have been big Pimlico houses, divided formally or informally into apartments of a few rooms so the address would have been occupied by several families at a time.  If you wish to browse through who was there, look for Felix Pannell as a starter.

Has the 1917 military death certificate been obtained in case it provides Ernest’s age at least?

Hi,

Probate calendar does not mention William in the probate award.

What other sources ( and info ) do you have?

Regards

The name William comes from the Register of Soldiers’ Effects.

Ernest’s accrued pay was remitted on 30 Jan 1918 to “executors Samuel & Frederick Hartley”.

His war gratuity was paid out on 27 Oct 1919 to “executors Samuel & William Hartley”.
