Clifton House
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 03:15 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother was born in Insch Aberdeenshire.  My cousin back in England has her bible with the address Clifton House Insch.  I have googled Clifton House but nothing comes up for that area.  Can anyone find details of what Clifton House was.  I believe she was at one point a Cook but that was in the town of Alford Aberdeenshire. Just curious as to what Clifton House was.  The bible contains all the births of her children, quite a few of them, with their dates which my cousin will let me have after the Christmas holidays.  My great grandmother was Alexis Robb born in Premnay Aberdeenshire in 1859 who then married a George Furze.

Quite a few mentions in Newspaper of Clifton House, Insch.
It sounds like a regular house.
Side tracked to a friendís very interesting Norfolk families. MORGAN, PRATT, HORNOR, SUCKLING, GLEANE etc. And in London DOWNES, du CROZ, MORGAN (same MORGANs as the Norwich lot)

1881

On Scotlandís people

ROBB
ALEXIS
1881
F
21
171/ 3/ 4
Alford
Aberdeen
Buy

So assume if she was at Clifton House it must have been between 1881 census and birth of first child who seems to be

FURZE, GEORGE      Motherís maiden name =   ROBB
GRO Reference: 1883  S Quarter in FULHAM  Volume 01A  Page 264

(Edited because I found an earlier one)

You can carry on through the GRO (www.gro.gov.uk) site matching birth registrations with the census names. You may find other children who die before the next census. (I donít know for sure, havenít looked, leaving some of the fun for you).

1891

1911

Implies married c 1883.  I have to say I donít see the marriage in Scotland or England

I have no record of a marriage and nobody seems to be able to find one.

1881 the Grant family are there.

I can only see transcript. Needs credits to view on Scotlandís people.

Alexander 64 a roadoverseer
A daughter Agnes b 1852. Domestic servant
2 sons one a millwright and one a road labourer
And 2 grandsons.

Doesnít really seem the sort of household to give a bible as a going away gift...

Looked up that 1881 census - there are 8 separate households on the page ( and more, perhaps on adjacent pages) who are living at Clifton House - first household is Clifton House, the rest have 'do' as their dwelling address.

I wondered if that might be the case.
