Robert Stowell
« on: Sunday 23 December 18 22:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi can anyone please help, I am looking for details of Robert Stowell who married Hannah Smith 11th October 1789 at Bingley Yorkshire, as far as I can tell they had 2 sons John (1791) and Squire (1796).

I think Robert Stowell came from Yorkshire but I cannot be certain, in the marriage record it looks like both Robert Stowell and Hannah Smith came from Bingley Yorkshire.

Any help would be great, thanks

Graham

Robert Stowell is my 2nd cousin 6 times removed - we're descended from the Stow family of Kildwick. My branch mostly used the spelling Stow with occasional use of Stowell, but the branch in Bradley (descendants of John Stow and Susanna Howarth) seem to have become Stowell more or less exclusively.

I have more information on the family on my website at https://www.arthur.akpak.uk/

Brian - I'm wondering where you got the information from. Was it Wharfegen?

When I looked there a few months ago and found something similar to what you've given, I wasn't totally convinced that Susanna Howarth was from Ovenden, as the Stows don't seem to have made any other connections in that direction. However, I haven't looked into her in any detail and don't have any other alternatives to suggest at present.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Many thanks for your help, I'll look at the Stow surname now to see where it leads.

Arthur,

I noticed in your post that you say the "Stowell" family descended from the "Stow" family, do you know when the first change of spelling was made and why?

Regards

Graham

Not exactly - I first came across it with in the family of John Stow and Ellen nee Emmott, (married 1786 in Kildwick), by which time I think the Bradley line were already using Stowell. But I've since come across earlier examples, though not in Kildwick.

Currently my best theory is that it tended to change as family members moved around, and possibly if they returned to their roots or kept in touch with the family there, the alternative spelling seeped back as well.
