On the William Pattie/Elizabeth Collins botp marriage the witnesses were Thomas Taylor and Thomas Reed.  The witnesses were not frequent witmnesses.

One Pattie burial in Ford:  20 Jun 1791 Elizabeth daughter of William Pattie of Milfield

Thanks Janis the 1791 entry for Elizabeth is interesting. I did not know about the Milfield reference either. I was a little confused however about the significance of frequent witnesses? Can you please enlarge on this? Thanks again. Chrs Rob

A witness is more apt to be a friend or relative of the couple.  Frequent witnesses tended to work at the church or live next door.

Hi Colin just wondering what SP means? Thanks for these PETTIE births...hopefully one of them is my William! For the list you provided where are these parishes?

Also I am a little confused about the 'Dissenters Church' too. What were these people dissenting against? Does this relate to the English/Scots churches & their differences?

Thanks Rob

SP would be the website Scotland's People.  Any denomination in England that was not Church of England AKA Anglican is considered dissenter.

I imagine the age of William at death may have been in error or simply approximated?? I notice that William was at Milfield in 1791 and Cannongate in 1800 both areas very close to Coldstream. So although not proved I still tend to think I have his correct birth at Coldstream in 1771. William was a weaver so I was wondering whether weaving was common in both Milfield & Cannongate. Are there other records that may show him working in this field? In the absence of any large textile weaving factories I imagine he may have operated in a small business. What type of material is the likely candidate for this weaving in these areas? Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
I received a notification for your latest post but not the one when you asked the question about SP, I was having computer problems earlier this year. Luckily Janis answered the question.

SP https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ is a moderated priced pay to view site for all Scottish family history records but you probably have found this out by now.
