Who was Maria Ganett
« on: Monday 24 December 18 16:26 GMT (UK) »
Maria Garnett was born 15 April 1790 but I can find nothing about her. She appears in a list of births in the Wilson family possibly because an Ann Garnett married John Wilson on October 30 1797 at Cartmel and most of the children of that marriage were baptised at Cartmel. It may be of course that she was born in one of the adjacent counties Westmorland or Cumberland. Could she be a child of Ann prior to marriage? I have tried lancs opc but without any success though I must admit my computer abilities are very limited. Any help or guidance members can provide would be very welcome.

Was Ann old enough to have had a child in 1790?

When you say she appears in a list of births in the Wilson family - who compiled the list?  Any clues as to where the info re her birth was found as there’s nothing on the usual sites

Carole - thanks for your note. You will have noticed the mistake in the heading; Ganett is of course Garnett. My guess is that the list was prepared by a solicitor (quality of the writing) in the 1920s when certain in laws were trying to find where an ancestor's small fortune had gone. Ann was born 1768 and Maria 1790  so a pre marriage birth is a possibility. Some of the Wilson names have death dates but Maria does not.  As far as I know there is no Cumberland/Westmorland equivalent to lancs opc.

I cannot find anything more about Maria but I live in hope of finding her.

There was a Staveley in Cartmel Parish in Lancashire, then the Parish moved to Cumbria (Cumberland) in 1974 just to make searching easier ::) Looking at this link it seems there is a lack of baptism records online for the 1790 period,

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Staveley,_Lancashire_Genealogy

It could be out of date as I also found,

I can't find a Maria GARNETT birth that fits yet, but I mentioned this one because she is living with a John WILSON in 1851.

Daisy

Daisy -thanks for the details. The marriage record certainly suggests that it is the Maria on my list.
The John Wilson will be the one who married Maria's mother so it certainly suggests that she was born out of wedlock. John died in 1856 so it seems reasonable to suppose Maria went to live with her son Thomas. I now have, I think, the full picture apart from the full details of her birth. Excellent! :) :)
