Bate / Fiddler or Fidler / Stockton siblings
« on: Tuesday 25 December 18 13:36 GMT (UK) »
Mary Bate m. 04 Dec 1826 at Lymm, Cheshire, England to John Fidler or Fiddler

a daughter Caroline Bate was bapt 03 Apr 1825 at Warrington, Lancashire, England and appears aged 17 in 1841 as Caroline Fidler in School Lane, Warrington, Lancashire, England with her mother and...

...with her half brothers

Thomas Fidler aged 10 (bapt 25 Dec 1831 at Warrington, Lancashire, England)
James Fidler aged 3 (bapt 03 Dec 1837 at Warrington, Lancashire, England)

Mary later married on 30 July 1843 at Runcorn, Cheshire, England to the widower Thomas Stockton

they had a daughter Alice Stockton bapt 11 May 1845 at Warrington, Lancashire, England

(There are other siblings found but they are accounted for)

q1 - What happened to Caroline Bate - there is a death entry in 1842 but further research found this entry to be an infant child not a teenager

q2 - Thomas Fidler / Fiddler last traced in 1881 as a hawker, widower, living at 17 Bank Street (boarder) - not matched a death entry to him as yet

q3 - James Fidler / Fiddler last traced in 1881 as a brickmaker, married, living at 70 Lythgoes Lane (lodger) - not matched a death entry to him as yet (Amelia Bradshaw householder and only other resident)

q4 - Alice Stockton - not in 1851 census, no birth and no death entry - what happened to this mystery child

If you are researching these branches or surnames, I'd be happy to hear from you - hope the requests made sense, thank you.

Merry Christmas!

Re Caroline Bate

There is a marriage Dec 1856 Stockport 8a 32 between Caroline Bate and John Parken.

The actual ceremony took place 25 December 1856 in the Parish Church at Heaton Mersey between Caroline Bate and John Parkin, although she signs Bates. Her father is given as James Bate, Tallow Chandler. (To save face, perhaps)

In the 1861 Census they are living in Manchester with daughter Mary, had moved to Chorlton by 1871 and to Warrington by 1881. On all Censuses Caroline gives pob as Warrington, although the birth year is out by a year or two. The GRO site gives the mmn for Mary as Bate

1861 RG09/2937/F80/p11
1871 RG10/3983/F65/p33
1881 RG11/3797/F90/p7

Re Alice Stockton

The baptism for Alice is on lancs opc site 11 May 1845 Thomas and Mary, abode School Brow, occ Sawyer.

I cannot find a registration for Alice however the GRO site has two birth registrations in Warrington for an Elizabeth Stockton mmn Bate, one in Mar 1844 and one in June 1845. There are also two deaths one in Jun 1845 and one in Sep 1847 both giving the child's age as 1

Lancs opc has the two burials
Elizabeth Stockton buried 27 April 1845 abode Buckleys Court
Elizabeth Stockton buried 20 August 1846 abode Buckleys Court
Unfortunately names of parents not given.

Whilst checking for a baptism for either Elizabeth I spotted one for a Richard Stckton in 1847 parents Thomas and Mary, occ Sawyer abode Buckleys Court.
On checking the GRO site the mmn is Fidler.

It is possible that Alice could be the Elizabeth whose birth was registered 1845 and who died 1846 which is why she doesn't appear on any other records. The parents may have registered the name as Elizabeth and then changed their minds before the Christening.

However it is strange that in April 1845 the abode is given as Buckleys Court for Elizabeth's burial yet a month later it is School Brow for Alice's baptism then a year later back to Buckleys Court for the second burial. Could be that Alice was baptised to a totaly different Thomas and Mary.

WOW!

Thank you so much.

It is a tricky tree to deal with and lots of conflicting info in the records.

I'll look into your findings and have another go.

Best wishes for the New Year.

Mary's father is listed as James Bate a labourer, on her second marriage details!
