What an incredible story!  It is so tragic that she lost her fiance but how wonderful that his reply has at last been found and that she is still living and now knows about this.

Wow,how very sad, so many young women left to live lonely lives but what terrific teachers some of them made,
I  was taught by a few,most stayed single out of loyalty but also there must have been a shortage of young men .
The sadness of any war goes on and on,but when so well reported as the last two major conflicts they are remembered so well.
I do sometimes wonder about other wars,no known graves etc,throughout history, even the Trojan war,except for the Heroes we know nothing of the
many others who were killed, and how would news get back to their families?
Hopefully all the lonely years are now as nothing with the letter saying what she would want to know.
It really is sad!

Where are the names of the dead from WW2?  The lady in question believes he must have been killed as she thinks he would have gone to see her as soon as he got back to UK otherwise and he didn't, even knowing that she had agreed to marry him.

The article says that it is not known if he survived, though he doesn’t appear on the CWGC website. But it also names only one eventual survivor.

Unfortunately, Walker is a very common surname, and "Bill" may not have been a William. It may have been a middle name, or something else entirely.

I've just been researching someone whose first names were Neville George, but who was known to all as "Bill", even when he was a Lieutenant Colonel.

Add in the possibility of a change of regiment, and the chances of finding the man on CWGC go down a long way,

Great story. I would love to know what other letters were found alongside that one.

I'm afraid to say that many things were promised during war time, and many promises broken. Her 20 year old naive self may have been trusting and sure he would return to her, but this may not have been the case. He might have died, or he might have "done the dirty" on her. You would expect if they were close enough to marry, she would know his parents - if he had died, or was missing etc, surely his parents would have been informed? Wouldn't they have told her? Wouldn't she have asked them if they had heard anything of him?

Apologies for being cynical, but it just seems a bit odd to me. Alternatively, there may have been omissions by the writer of the article.
