« on: Thursday 27 December 18 18:32 GMT (UK) »
I have this marriage of my 5xGreat Grandparents Hugh Paterson and Jean Reid.

Her father is John Reid ?? To Sir Archibald Hope. I can’t work out occupation and can anyone advise if I might be able to find out more about this?

Thank you 😊

Grieve - in other words farm manager or overseer.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Wonder if that would cover a tax man?

No, absolutely nothing to do with taxes.

But a grieve might have gone on to become a tacksman, which is a type of tenancy that allows the holder to sublet land to subsidiary tenants.

(Sometimes spelling is quite important! :) )

Do you know if Sir Archibald's estate records have survived? That would be the place to look for that sort of connection.

Thanks,

I will check this out. I know I looked into this years ago, but cant find my original research and haven’t been working on my family tree as much as I’d like.

I found a will that looks like might be him. It has quite a lot of pages and the handwriting is very hard to decipher.
