Leah HOLE bap 8 March 1810 West Pennard
« on: Friday 28 December 18 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Leah Hole is my 3xgreat grandmother. She married James Gould at West Bradley church on 24 Sept 1829 (witnesses include a Maria Hole).

I am struggle to be sure of Leah's parents. There is a baptism of a Leah Hole on 8 March 1810 at West Pennard - father William Hole, mother Ann.

A marriage of a William Hole to an Anne Collins at West Pennard on 4 Oct 1802 seems possible.

There is one census entry for this couple, I think, in 1841: William Hole b1781, Ann b1796, James 1815, William 1821, Elizabeth 1823, Elizabeth Quick 1833 and Maria  Hole 1838. All born Somerset, living in 1841 South Town, West Pennard. (Leah was married in 1829 so would not be with them).

I looked up any other children born to this couple and find Hester 1807, Job 1809, Mary Ann 1813, and John 1818. There are potential others baptised in Wells (Mary Anne 1805 & 1812) and Compton Pauncefoot (William 1802 and John 1803). Could the couple have moved around?

The birth date of the Ann on this 1841 census (1796) does not fit a marriage in 1802 or for her to be mother to Leah (she would be 14 yrs old) but I can't find another marriage of William Hole and Ann in the local area to West Pennard just before Leah's birth date of 1810.

Maybe Ann Collins' dob is a lot earlier than 1796 but I couldn't find anyone fitting the bill who married a William Hole around the time I'm looking.

I've yet to follow up William Hole's parents, but any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Could this be Ann's burial at St Nicholas, West Pennard 25 Apr 1846
Ann Hole age 62 (bn c1784)

Yes, that is what I thought.

I've just looked at possible William Hole births and deaths and have a baptism of 3 Oct 1773 and death of 17 Feb 1842.

Which accounts for this couple only being in the 1841 census, which unfortunately doesn't give up a lot of information.

There is always a small chance that the Ann with William in 1841 was not his wife as relationships are not given in 1841 but I think it was more likely that her age was enumerated wrongly.

FindMyPast Parish marriages (transcription)

Could Mary Ann Hole, bap 25 Dec 1813, West Pennard be the Maria Hole, witness to the 1829 marriage (William Laver is the other witness)

The possible burial for William Hole in 1842 gives an age of 68 (bn c1774)

That would tie in with baptism at W. Pennard
3 Oct 1773
William Hole
son of John & Hester

I would suggest that Ann Collins was the one baptised 2/11/1783 Butleigh, Somerset (just 5 miles south of West Pennard), dau. of James and Elizabeth.

Thanks everyone.

It is possible the Mary Ann baptised 1813 was Maria, witness to Leah's wedding and maybe the Maria b 1838 in the 1841 census was her daughter (Mary Ann having died)?

I do think the baptism and burial dates for William Hole are correct and fit the the census.

Annette - I cannot find the 2/11/1783 baptism of Ann Collins in Butleigh using Findmypast. Did you get it elsewhere? It certainly fits both Leah's birth and William and Ann's marriage.
