Vickery photo puzzle
« on: Friday 28 December 18 22:57 GMT (UK) »
I am attaching two photos...

I am thinking the single portrait is of one of the two gentlemen in the second photo. The single portrait has a label on the back for Philadelphia Photo Gallery - E. Riisfeldt - which I believe to be at King Street, Newtown from 1888 to 1890. The second photo has a label of The Cabinet Portrait, J. D. Vickery, Barnstaple... the dilemma is that I believe that the clothing for both photos is the possibly the same.
As I am trying to identify these men, I think I may now have to look for a trip back to England which may help with a date... the Vickery family came from Barnstaple in Devon and these photos were given to me as possible Vickery family photos...(photos have been edited by handypandy and DrDude45 with thanks)
I apologise for not looking at this possible link when requesting the work on the photos originally...

One photo is taken in Australia and the other in England... yet the clothing appears to be the same...

Cheers

They are extremely alike aren't they - twins?

The "pin" looking thing on the tie is shown on the man on the left and his beard looks a little wilder like the single photo but I don't quite understand what the possible link you are trying to find is  :-\

One photo is taken in England and one in Australia, and I feel that the dress is the same...
they certainly look as if they could be twins... they are very alike.
I am trying to identify these men... the photos have been given to me as possible VICKERY family, so am looking for any clue that may help. They were discovered in a trunk of papers which belonged to a VICKERY family many years ago, and have gradually made their way to me, as I have VICKERY lineage in South Australia. These photos, generally are taken in NSW, but the English one and the clothing made me wonder.

So have you searched Devon records for twin births at Barnstaple?

Is it possible that the single portrait was merely reprinted in Australia? I think in my collection of photographs I have one that is definitely taken in England but printed again in Sydney in the early 1910s. I'm not sure what the process was for reprinting in the 1890s though.  :-\

Ah, So now I see what OP means.
The photographers of the double portrait were J D Vickery of Barnstaple. I see newspaper references to them in Barnstaple area in the 1880's.
Vickery was not necessarily the name of the men. ::)

These photos were given to me as possible VICKERY family photos... I have done some research on the photographer and he is connected to the same family, so that is possibly why these men had their photos taken by him... I have wondered if the photo was a copy from the original of the two, but the angle is different. It could be that he simply wore the same outfit for the second photo, but I would not have thought he would have bothered to have a second photo taken in Sydney after his arrival in Australia, having had one taken in England, but of course, he must have ... this family regularly exchanged photographs, from info found in letters that were exchanged and kept. I guess it is only something I can really guess at... what I really need is another positively identified photo of one of the gents, to really start getting somewhere!!! (Dreaming, I know...)

I would venture to say the two photos were taken on the same day.
The chap who is standing simply had another photo taken as a seated subject.

The sit of the clothing is identical as far as can be seen-
The tie kinks slightly on the edge of the vest and it fall to 2 separate sections in exactly the same way in both pictures.

His hair splits in the same place in his brush-back style.

I would suggest the negative came with a visitor to Sydney, or possibly by mail and was printed by The Philadelphia Gallery.
