Hi folks, I wonder if you can help I am looking for more details on William Hunter born in Ballantrae in 1861.  His father was Robert but  I cant find his occupation . I would also like to know his mothers name. Have looked at few sites but this is all I can find.  I know plenty bout his life but the early years are a puzzle.  Many thanks for looking.

A quick look for him on Ancestry gives his date of birth as 1/6/1861. This is only a transcription and his original Birth Certificate can be found on Scotlands People and can be downloaded at a nominal cost. I think this is the correct family.

The transcription gives his father as Robert Hunter and his mother as Sarah Dick.

Going back to the 1861 Scotland Census his father is listed as a farmer of 170 acres employing 2 ploughmen and 2 girls. There are 6 other children also listed.

By the 1871 census the father is a widower and has moved to England with all the children.

There is a death on scotlands people in 1864 at Ballantrae for a Sarah Hunter.

Sorry, this is just a quick reply as I am going out for a while but I will post some more information later for you.

Thank you very much.  He was an incredible man who saved the lives of thousands with his design of the "Serbian Barrel"  during ww1.
