Finding Elizabeth Hughes
« on: Monday 31 December 18 15:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi
One of my brick walls for years has been a woman called Elizabeth Ann Hughes. She married George Philipson in Windermere in 1894. I know what happened to her after that but her early life is a mystery.

I have done many many searches and cannot pin her down because unfortunately I don't know enough about her.
Her marriage certificate says her father was John Hughes and that he was a farmer.

She claims to have been born in Manchester which I have assumed is true but her parents or Grandaparents most likely had a connection with North Wales(Rhyl and/or St Asaph)
According to those who knew her she was rather proud of her Welsh connection and she could speak Welsh. Though I know this in itself proves nothing.
To summarise all I can prove is:
Her Marriage in  1894,
Her whereabouts in subsequent  censuses
Her death in 1945
The censuses have her year of birth as 1870 in the but when she died in 1945 her age was 80years  which suggests
1865 as her birth year and makes her harder to pin down in searches.
Does anyone with more experience have any ideas.
Many Thanks

Have you looked for her in the 1939 Register for a precise birthdate?

A free index search suggests she claims 23 May 1871.  Even if she is being economical with the truth about the year, often the day/month turn out to be true or very close to the true birthday.

Who witnessed the 1894 marriage?
One witness was Isabella Miller from Manchester who is listed at Casterton servants school in one census (I think  1891). I thought they may have known each other but then I couldn't find a connection.I think it's a strong possibility though.
I will check the other witness.
Thanks

Hi,
I did look at that and although I think the year is almost certainly wrong (if family rumours are to be believed) I think you're right the date might be true. After all the best fibs have a bit of truth in them.
Many Thanks

Hi
Had not looked at this as it wasn't Manchester but am now thinking that I need to look way outside the the box for this lady.
Will look into it.
Many Thanks

Not necessarily a fib, people were not so aware of their birth dates in these times as we are now.
