Henry Benjamin Swiney, possibly of Walthamstow - interred where in 1900?
« on: Monday 31 December 18 21:48 GMT (UK) »
He was an artillery gunner who was invalided back to England, from South Africa, in June 1900, and committed suicide on the 8th of September 1900.

"At Bromley, London, on Monday night, a coroner's jury found that Henry Benjamin Swiney, gunner, committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a train during temporary insanity. The evidence showed that Swiney was invalided from South Africa and was treated with drink wherever he went, the Coroner remarking that the drink and excitement had brought on delirium tremens. Deceased belonged to the 6th Company Royal Garrison Artillery depot now at Devonport."

His death seems to have been registered at Poplar, and his age at death was 28.

His Queen's South Africa medal was later issued to his mother, Mrs E. E. Swiney, c/o Samuel G. Swiney, of 19, Fairfield Road, Higham Hill, Walthamstow.

Where would he have been interred? And if anyone can come up with the reason he was invalided home, that would be fantastic. It was likely to have been enteric fever, but possibly a wound or injury.

Unfortunately his records show he was treated a lot for contagious gonorrhoea, so that may have been the cause.

Thank you, Jebber. As a reservist, he was in a civilian occupation until recalled to the artillery, no earlier than October 1899. I wonder if he contracted gonorrhoea while living in England, although prostitution is recorded as existing in Cape Town at that time, and, of course, the influx of soldiers to South Africa meant camp followers. Something that will most likely remain unknown.

His records are not particularly interesting or informative, there are quite a lot of duplicate pages, however his military service was exemplary.

Happy New Year.
