Mitchell Family, Smart Family Darlington
« on: Tuesday 01 January 19 19:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I've hit a brick wall very early on with the Smart Family and also Mitchell family from Darlington. Does anyone have any links or info to Lily (née Mitchell) and William Smart from Darlington? They would have been born early 1900's. I can't find much going back along the Smart line beyond William, but have his father down on a certificate of marriage as Samuel Smart (deceased).

Welcome to Rootschat

The Smart/Mitchell marriage was 1919 and he was William H.  What was his middle name?  Have you looked for William & Lily on the 1911 census?

How old is he on the 1919 marriage cert?  What is Samuel’s occupation?   Who were the witnesses?

What was Lily’s fathers name and occupation?

I have a feeling he was in his 30’s as was Lily.  Is he shown as a bachelor or widower

This William's birth reg'd Mar.1880 Auckland - mmn Bennett (2 older siblings had same mmn).

He was a plain William - other records indicate William H. Smart was born latter half of 1881 so would not have been alive on 1881 census.

Agree that we need to know all the details on the marriage certificate specifically marital status and occupations to hopefully identify who William H. was and what the 'H' stood for (the other plain William shown above was married by 1911).  At the moment, doesn't look to me that either of them were local to the Darlington area.

Thank you so much for the replies, I didn't expect such quick replies!

I have some more info:

William Henry Smart was born 22/9/1881 and died 1957. He was born in Darlington but can't seem to find out whether his parents were from there.

William and Lily married Sept 1919

Lily was born 17/1/1985 in Shildon, to parents James (b. 1858)and Mary (b.1865)Mitchell. She had siblings Rhoda Annie, Minnie, Charley and Thomas.

It is just strange I can't find much info on the Smarts, Samuel had died by the time William married as he is deceased on the marriage cert, as is Lily's father James.

If that birth date is from the 1939 Register, then do bear in mind that sometimes people gave what they thought was the correct info but often they were a year or so out.

Could you tell us what you have that tells you he was born in Darlington? I checked the GRO index and the only William Smart birth registered in Darlington District 1881 +/- a year was a William Bayles Smart, mother's maiden name Bayles.

You have William's marriage record which has given you his father's name of Samuel, other than 'deceased', did it give an occupation for Samuel? Who were the witnesses? That could help us to look in the previous census returns and hopefully help you to trace William back and find out about his family plus when and where he was born.

Boo

The details you give are from the 1939 register which is why I posted the 1881 entry.

However - see Annette's reply where that William was married by 1911.

Digging around I found an 1891 entry for Leeds indexed as Hilton Smart aged 9 - father Samuel all children born various parts of Yorkshire.  Hilton is William on the image

Samuel Smart    33 b Nazeing Essex ? gardener
Mary H 31 b Full Sutton Yorkshire
Mary E  11
Hilton (William)  9
Charles  7
Alice  4

Deaths March qtr 1892
Smart    Samuel    34    Leeds    9b   354

1901 entry for Yorkshire - Smart children shown as stepchildren.  Edwin Hewitt & Mary Ann Smart married 1899 Middlesborough

Edwin Hewitt    37
Mary A Hewitt    40 b Stamford Bridge
Wm H Smart    19 b Flaxton
Charles Smart  17   ditto
Alice Smart    14 Leeds
William Hewitt    11
Miriam Hewitt    9
John Hewitt    7

Flaxton came under York RD

Births Dec 1881
SMART    William Henry        York    9d   71    mmn HOPWOOD

A birth in late September 1881 would most likely only be registered in the next qtr

Marriages December qtr 1878
HOPWOOD    Mary Ann         York    9d   119
SMART    Samuel         York    9d   119

I found Samuel Smart age 16 born Gosforth in the 1871 census in Sunny Brow (Crook, County Durham) living as a stepson (given as son-in-law) in the household of Thomas and Isabella Armstrong. Including him there are five Smart children with the youngest being 9 months old so everything seems to have happened very quickly.
