My father in law was wounded in Gallipoli on 9th August 1915 and we have a painted horse shoe with the date of his injury and wondered if anyone else owns one of these and what is the origin of these momentos.

The only mementos I have heard about are live tortoises brought back live to their respective countries by their owners, British or ANZAC. There are probably not too many painted horse shoes   
because there must have been a limited supply of horseshoes at Gallipoli and the quartermasters must have kept them under lock and key. Examples of some but I could not find any from Gallipoli.
