Does anyone have access to the Wingerworth PR's please?  I need to check for the parents of Joseph Mellor bpt there on 28/10/1764.

Many thanks

just to save anyone else the bother, the FindMyPast transcription does not name the parent!!  How annoying!  I presume the transcriber couldn't read the parent name.  Not sure whether these records are on Ancestry?  Sorry.

Thanks Claire.  I haven't found anywhere online that has details of the parents.  I am hoping that someone has access to the original registers ...

The original registers for Wingerworth are on Ancestry, but they are too badly soiled/damaged to be read in detail and have not been fully indexed there.

The transcription on FindMyPast is actually the FamilySearch transcription, which is not from the parish register but from the bishop’s transcripts. The FamilySearch catalogue shows that digitised images of the bishop’s transcripts for Wingerworth are only viewable at LDS Family History Centres, or you could email the record office and ask for a printout of the page from the bishop’s transcript.

Thank you Bookbox once again for sharing your incredible expertise.  With everything crossed I will try LDS and/or DRO as you suggest.

As you know the exact date,  you might be able to look at the originals on Ancestry and work out where your entry is.  These early records are hard to follow/read, all the writing crammed in, but you might be able to do it.  Search for a baptism for that year, no name, Wingerworth, then look at what the result shows up.

Good thinking re Ancestry, but sadly it is text only, no image available.

The Wingerworth images are on Ancestry, in the database Derbyshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812. But, as I said above, they are badly soiled/damaged.

If you want to look, navigate to the above database from Ancestry's Card Catalogue, use the Browse panel on the right, select the register labelled 1540-1812, and try looking around image 94 of 142 (left-hand page, lower half).

Doh, I didn't know you could do that!  Thank you, and yes, the registers are in a terrible state.  I will give the BT's a go.
