I have a brick wall I suspect I can only ever form a hypothesis to, rather than ever soundly conclude, however I'd love if someone could look over my hypothesis and tell me if you see any fatal flaws, or if you can think of any other routes I could use to develop it/make it stronger.
Brick wall: I am researching the Challinors of Oldham, Lancashire and have traced them back to my 5 x great grandfather George Challinor, the first recorded Challinor in Oldham, who had 12 children between 1780 and 1801. He therefore must have been born elsewhere.
His burial record in 1836 gives his age as 89 giving year of birth c. 1747.
If I search parish records across the country (have tried Ancestry, FindMyPast, FS, etc.) I get two results:
George Chaloner b. 1747 Sheffield Cathedral to Thomas Chaloner (hereafter
Sheffield George)
George Chaloner b. 1747 Hinckley, Leicester, to Robert and Elisabeth (hereafter
Leicester George)
Here are the two routes by which I've formed my hypothesis that
Sheffield George is the right one, however I'm aware it can only ever be a hypothesis as I'm looking at the whole country here and there may be records that are lost, not yet transcribed, etc.
Route 1: see if either George can be ruled out by corresponding marriages/burials/children in that location.
Sheffield George: no corresponding records.
Leicester George: no corresponding marriage or burial, but a child is born to a George Chaloner in 1778 which would make Leicester George 31 years old.
Route 2: identify the family unit of each George and compare the names with those George gave to his own children to see if any naming patterns:
