Please could someone look over my brick wall hypothesis?
« on: Wednesday 02 January 19 14:14 GMT (UK) »
I have a brick wall I suspect I can only ever form a hypothesis to, rather than ever soundly conclude, however I'd love if someone could look over my hypothesis and tell me if you see any fatal flaws, or if you can think of any other routes I could use to develop it/make it stronger.

Brick wall: I am researching the Challinors of Oldham, Lancashire and have traced them back to my 5 x great grandfather George Challinor, the first recorded Challinor in Oldham, who had 12 children between 1780 and 1801. He therefore must have been born elsewhere.

His burial record in 1836 gives his age as 89 giving year of birth c. 1747.

If I search parish records across the country (have tried Ancestry, FindMyPast, FS, etc.) I get two results:

George Chaloner b. 1747 Sheffield Cathedral to Thomas Chaloner (hereafter Sheffield George)
George Chaloner b. 1747 Hinckley, Leicester, to Robert and Elisabeth (hereafter Leicester George)

Here are the two routes by which I've formed my hypothesis that Sheffield George is the right one, however I'm aware it can only ever be a hypothesis as I'm looking at the whole country here and there may be records that are lost, not yet transcribed, etc.

Route 1: see if either George can be ruled out by corresponding marriages/burials/children in that location.

Sheffield George: no corresponding records.
Leicester George: no corresponding marriage or burial, but a child is born to a George Chaloner in 1778 which would make Leicester George 31 years old.

Route 2: identify the family unit of each George and compare the names with those George gave to his own children to see if any naming patterns:

Oldham George (brick wall): children Samuel, James, Betty, Ketty, Joseph, Mally, Kitty, Thomas, Maria, William, Charlotte, George

Sheffield George: grandparents George and Maria; father Thomas; siblings Jonathan, Hannah, Thomas, Mary, George, Joseph; aunties/uncles Martha, Maria, George, Elizabeth, Samuel, Anne, Hannah, Edward, Thomas, Jonathan - 5 COMMON NAMES

Leicester George: grandparents George and Susanna; parents Robert and Elisabeth; siblings John, Mary, Richard, Robert, Joseph, Charles, Susanna, Elisabeth, Cornelius - 2 COMMON NAMES

So the common names (whilst flimsy evidence) again seem more in favour of Sheffield...

Let me know your thoughts? :)

Obviously you can only form a hypothesis on extant records so there could be Chal*i*n*r baptisms elsewhere. The 2 you quote are the only 2 on familysearch.

Are you able to compare the 2 fathers' occupations with 1747 George? You are most likely aware that sons often followed their fathers into the same trade/occupation.

What's the source for this Rosie just so I can look it up too? Doesn't look promising for me! :(
