I don’t understand, there is no whittling required. Look at the 1939 register which is on FindMyPast or Ancestry.

I think maybe I'm just too tired.Ancestry is only showing me the Joe I mentioned previously in the '39 census. From your confusion I'm guessing it should be showing me the address I mentioned first of all.I'll tackle it tomorrow full of coffee.Let's assume I find it,the way to go then would be to try to trace other people listed at the same address i.e sibblings? See if I can follow their tree?

Did your Joseph die in 1987.  If so this is his death reg

Joseph Clarke born 28.12.1914 death registered Feb 1987 Birmingham. 32  564

Use freebmd to search for Clarke births with mothers maiden name Wilkins to get siblings names.  Some may have married by 1939 or be living away from home.

Look at the 1939 entry and compare father Joseph’s occupation with that on the 1943 marriage cert

I haven't a clue of his whereabouts on any day other than his wedding day and as I know his brides age to be false I can't even be sure of that.In that FreeBMD which Birmingham did you search as there are four option? And on rereading page one of this thread where did you find the reference to Irene Clarke and would she have been old enough to be a witness in'43? I'm so tired but I just can't stop.

You have been given all the details you need to correctly identify your Joseph Clarke.   You are extremely lucky that the address he gave when he married is where he was living in 1939.   You need to look at the 1939 register which lists his family and their relevant birthdates (and yes, Irene would be old enough to be a witness, she may also have been a bridesmaid).
