Lviv research. Poland? Ukraine?
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 03:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My grandfather was born in modern day Lviv, Ukraine in 1926. In 1926 Lviv/Lvov was part of Poland, so I'm wondering where am I best going to find out about his family pre ww2?

The internet doesn't seem to know much and I don't know if I'm better focusing on Warsaw, Kiev, or Lviv itself.

I know my grandfather's fathers name as it's on his UK marriage certificate but that's it.

Thanks in advance!

If you wish to read about the area at that time ...

"The Lost - a Search for Six of Six Million" by Daniel Mendelsohn, Harper Collins 2007
ISBN 978-0-00-725193-3

The situation in Bolechow, just south of Lviv, before and during WWII would probably have been very similar.
I've read this excellent book a couple of times. It's a mixture of family history research, with a lot of legwork in Europe, and first-hand testament regarding life and death in Bolechow before, and during, the occupation. I'm sure I'll read it yet again one day.

... and a couple of years ago, Erin2012 on RC added this ... <i>"If you liked the book and reread it like I have... Go on youtube and check out the documentary called Neighbors and Murderers."</i>
Almeroth, Germany (probably Hessen). Mawer, Softley, Johnson, Lancaster, Tatum, Bucknall (E.Yorks, Nfk, Lincs)

my father in law Ostap Kabluckyj was born 1927 just outside Lviv - nearest recognised village is Rogatyn - I have spent years researching him and his family
