Susannah Phillips Andersons Bay Cemetery
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 08:31 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information on a Susannah Crowdey born 1832 England married a William Henry Phillips in 1856 Tasmania had 2 sons there William Richard Phillips and George Hugh Johnson Phillips
I have not been able to trace this family after that. recently I have came across a marriage of George Hugh Johnstone Phillips in New Zealand 1888. Since then I have discovered a Susannah Phillips burial below and was hoping some one maybe able to come up with more information on her , parents perhaps. All the details below, age at death and born England and even how long in province all tally with being the same person I am looking for.
Any assistance would be most appreciated

cemetery transcript says she has been 5 (0?) years in province. I've attached that bit. I think it IS 50, which would mean she came to NZ about 1867.
Unfortunately, no family mentioned.

added, sorry, I have just realised you knew about how long in province already!

in the 1905-06 electoral roll

Susannah PHILLIPS is at Alexandra Street Caversham as is Thomas PHILLIPS a miner

in the 1914 She is at Alexandra Street, Caversham, says she is married but Thomas isn't there.

I'm thinking you might have to get the death certificate (print out from NZ BDMs is cheapest and will come as PDF) https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Search/Search?Path=querySubmit.m%3fReportName%3dDeathSearch%26recordsPP%3d30#SearchResults
to rule her in or out.

Have you picked up the marriage of Mary Breeze Crowdey in 1855 in Linc Tasmania?

I would suggest there is some relationship to Susannah Crowdey as both women have the same surname and each has a Compton as a witness?

Mary Breeze Crowdey has a William Compton as a marriage witness and Susannah Crowdey has a Sarah A Compton as a marriage witness. Both women married by the Church of Scotland too.

Also Mary Breeze Crowdey marries Frederick Robert Supplies (thought the surname was a typo) but the other marriage witness on Susannah Crowdeys marriage was a (something) Supplice

You mention Mary Breeze Crowdey in your other post:

Hello Rod

Just adding further information for "a Susannah PHILLIPS" (Dunedin, Otago area) who appears to be the same person who died in 1917 and is buried at Anderson's Bay.

The newspapers of the day are peppered with reports of this woman appearing in the local courts charged with vagrancy, insufficient means of support etc. etc.  and date from about January 1867.
There are too many articles to record here, but you may like to read through them at your leisure.

Examples :
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD18770926.2.10
City Police Court - September 1877 - Vagrancy - Susannah PHILLIPS aged about 45 years [bc 1832]

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/OW18740110.2.27.2
1874 - Susannah PHILLIPS - witness in murder trial - she is living with a man named John READY ...

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ESD18690823.2.10
1869 - Susannah PHILLIPS  ... mentions that her "husband who migrated to the West Coast ... she heard he had been drowned ... "  [Note:  am assuming she means the West Coast - South Island, NZ ? ]

Hi Rod

Here is the link to our PapersPast website (in case you are not familiar with it).

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers

I searched using "susannah phillips"  ... and also filtered results to return articles which appeared in the "otago" area newspapers.  [See "Title: "  all titles, all regions, box ]

many thanks to all who have replied to my message all much appreciated
After finding George Hugh Johnson Phillips marriage in NZ I was hoping I could trace William Henry and Susannah Phillips . It would look like the Susannah dying 1917 is not connected.
Can anyone find another death of either in NZ please. I have check Past Papers,  NZ BDM and cemeteries with little luck. Susannah parents were Robert Crowdey and Sarah Ann Stephenson.
I also have found a burial of a William Richard Phillips Invercargill in 1930 which could possibly be the other son
any scrape of information may break down my brickwall
Thanks again
Rod
