Hi to all,
Would like to know what the penalty would be for bigamously marrying between the years 1870 and 1900 ?

if you know  of a particular person who committed bigamy, then you may find a report in the newspaper. Then again a lot of people got away with bigamy so it may only be revealed when you a doing research into family history, I have a case in early 1900 that went undiscovered.

Old Bailey cases - search using "bigamy" in "Keyword(s)" and date range "Jan 1870" to "Dec 1900" - shd deliver 145 hits.

Welshnewspapers on line** -newspaper reports also make interesting reading. Search using "bigamy" in "Search" and use slider bars to restrict to "1870 - 1900"

Checking random cases you should see that sentences varied in severity

I recall finding information about a (distant) relative of mine who committed bigamy in some criminal registers on ancestry - I think it was this record set: https://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1590 but I'm not sure. It contained a lot of information, including marriage certificates from both marriages, birth certificates of children, and letters from wife number 1 explaining how he abandoned her! I don't recall the punishment, but I do remember that he later married wife number 2 legally.
