Please help ID Wunderwood Uniform
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 10:54 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please help identify the uniform these soldiers are wearing?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Standard Great War era British Army uniforms. Cap badges will ID the regimnnt, can't find it yet - someone will no doubt get there soon!

Best guess is Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derbyshire).

As you given the pic a man's name, is he the one you are researching or is it simply the uniforms?

Hi!  Thank you for getting back to me.

The pic came through to me as a hint, on Ancestry, for the widow of Frank Wm Underwood, 1918-1940.  It was marked simply as 'unknown group of soldiers', and the photo had been discovered amongst this lady's effects.
FW Underwood is/was my 1st Cousin-once removed.
The lady mentioned was widowed in 1940 and then went on to remarry and have a family.
One of the chaps in the photo resembles my late Grandfathers folk and I thought it possible it may have actually been Frank Wm Underwood, and that his widow had kept it after his passing and the family she went on to have with her second husband were therefore unfamiliar with anyone on the photo.
I now don't believe it can be him because the uniforms are WW1 issue and so before his time in service.
Online records show he was in the 50th (Northants Regt). Searchlight Regt, RA and died in the Grantham area, 1940 aged 22 years.

OK.  There were a number of Underwoods in the Sherwood Foresters in the Great War perhaps related to the lady in an earlier generation.
