WW1 photo restoration and identifying uniform

Dear all,

I recently received this photo of my great grandfather who was in the South Lancashire Regt - however he is wearing a bandolier and lanyard which other members of the regiment did not wear, and wonder why this is? If anyone is able to restore this or suggest how it might be done, I'd be immensely grateful!!

And to add that the lanyard would (should) have had a pocket knife attached, common to see pics where some men were wearing them others not - no reason.  And to note that some regiments were very late getting their webbing equipment and continued to wear the 1903 bandolier well into the war.
