Adam Greenwood and Mary Redman?
« on: Thursday 03 January 19 19:07 GMT (UK) »
My great, great, great grandfather was Henry Greenwood, born in 1797 in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.  His baptism record in October 1797 gives his parents' names as Adam Greenwood and Mary Redman.

Henry married Fanny Greenwood in Heptonstall on 24th November 1816, when he was 19 years old.  At St Thomas church.  Both of Wadsworth, and he is described on the marriage banns as a Weaver.  Henry and Fanny had many children in Heptonstall between his son Thomas in 1817 and Jane in 1827, then their daughter Mary was born in Manchester in 1830. The family are living in Silk Street, Manchester on the 1841 census.  Henry died in Henry Street, Manchester in 1847.

What I am looking for are any records of Henry's parents in the Hebden Bridge area, or wherever they came from.  There is a Mary Redman born on August 15th 1769 in Haworth, Yorkshire, father James, mother Betty, baptised at St Michael and All Angels, Haworth.  I don't know if this is my ancestor or not.  There is an Adam Greenwood baptised 26th September 1780 in St Peter, Sowerby, Yorkshire, son of Phaeby and James.  Again, I have no idea if this is the person I am looking for.

The only real information I have on Adam Greenwood and Mary Redman, are the names and place from their son Henry's baptism.  I haven't found records of any other children born to them, or any marriage record.

I think I had noticed that, I remember looking up the place Great Mitton and it was in Lancashire not Yorkshire, though county boundaries might have changed.

It does look as though Henry's parents had moved to Hebden Bridge from elsewhere.  Maybe it was a good thriving centre for weaving, with merchants having a route to sell their cloth?

Henry's mother was named as Mary on his baptism record.  So Mary would have to have died for his sibling's mother to be Sally in 1798? Or maybe the name was written wrong, or maybe the same person was referred to be two different names?

I do wonder if Adam Greenwood was ever married to Mary Redman.  Other baptisms on the page don't show a mothers maiden surname though they are hard to read.

Thanks, so that could have been the convention of what they did when the parents weren't married.
