I just said I have the marriages, thanks.

Seen that as well.

Sorry, I was replying to Carole as you had not initially posted his fathers details and had added them while I was posting the marriage details

I have the fathers of both wives.

I do not intend to spend money on certificates I don't need.

The information I have came from family search.

James appears on various census returns with one wife then the other.

Not sure you have the father of the second wife - none stated on the 1877 marriage entry  :-\

Perhaps a child's birth registration will give you her maiden name   :)

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Is this the right 1871 entry as the older children are shown in 1861 with James & Sarah so Elizabeth was with him pre-1877.  She is 52 on the marriage cert - 36 in 1871??

James Hartley    56 carter b Colne
Elizabeth wife  36 b Marsden
Joseph  20
Nancy  18
Benjamin  12
Mary  7
Sarah E     4
William  2

When did Sarah die?  If she died before the younger children were born then Elizabeth's maiden name will be on the birth reg - GRO online search needed

1881 has 2 more children so have you checked for their birth reg and then GRO online for mmn?

I do not know this yet as I was more interested in finding Elizabeth's first husband and James' mother.

Apart from Elizabeth Higginson - widow - you gave no information in your post as to where or when she was born nor did you say that no father was shown for her on the 1877 marriage cert.

I am assuming that you already had the 1871 entry I found so knew she was already living with James at that time?

The only way you will find her maiden name is via the younger children's birth registrations.  That will enable you to check for a marriage to Higginson to confirm it's the right person.

As I said in my earlier reply - a birthyear of 1821 for James is misleading given the variation in his birth year on the marriage certs and census entries.

Given that variation - you cannot discount the 1813 entry on Family Search which ticks the boxes for location and fathers name - particularly as James named one of his daughters Nancy

Elizabeth was born c1825; it could be later or earlier than this.

Her place of birth given on the Lancashire OPC website is Laneshaw Bridge, Lancashire.

11 Oct 1877 Christ Church, Colne, Lancashire
James Hartley - (X), 62, Carter, Widower, Bents
Elizabeth Higginson - (X), 52, Widow, Lanshaw Bridge
Groom's Father: James Hartley, Weaver
Witnesses  John Hartley; Joseph Pickles

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

I don't think this is the correct marriage.  Looking at the children's GRO birth registrations it is more likely to be this one:

Marriage: 5 Feb 1866 St Bartholomew, Colne, Lancashire, England
James Hartley - (X), 49, Weaver, Widower, Bents
Elizabeth Smith - 30, Spinster, Barrowford
    Groom's Father: James Hartley, Weaver
Bride's Father: William Smith, Farm Labourer
Witness: Marth Sharp, (X); John Horsfield
Married by Banns by: G Davidson
    Register: Marriages 1865 - 1870, Page 4, Entry 8
