Maybe they were trying to hide something? ;-D
The reason I think the Alfred Bickell that Rosetta eventually married in 1874 was previously married is that in 1881 there was a son Alfred b. around 1870 and another John b around 1874 (who may or may not have been Rosetta's son)

1881  RG11; Piece: 392; Folio: 104; Page: 33

Alfred Bicknell Head 36 Bricklayers Labourer St Lukes, Middlesex, England
Rosetta Bicknell   Wife 32   Shoreditch, Middlesex, England
George Nightingale Step Son Scholar 14 St Lukes, Middlesex, England
Alfred Bickell Son 11 St Lukes, Middlesex, England
John Bickell Son 7   St Lukes, Middlesex, England
Rosetta Bickell Daughter 4   St Lukes, Middlesex, England
Catherine Bickell Daughter  0 St Lukes, Middlesex, England

I also found that Rosetta and Alfred had two more children: James and Ellen.

That's their daughter Rosetta. But I'm glad you posted that because I wasn't sure if she had married George Monk or James Chandlers (I only have access to the index records). John and Catherine were likely Rosetta's siblings.

What did you find for the 1891 census? (I don,t have it for this family)

It also appears that Rosetta (daughter)'s brother James married Ellen Elizabeth Diller and her sister Ellen John Arthur Noys.

In 1911 Rosetta (mother) and Alfred Bickell are living with daughter Ellen and son-in-law Noys (head).

I've been noticing a shift in naming patterns at the end of the 19th, early 20th century (at least in the Neale branch of my tree), early children seem to be named for their parent more often than in earlier generations.

Suggested birth registration for Alfred junior - if correct, his age in the 1881 census is inaccurate:

Alfred Bickell was recorded as a bachelor when he married in 1874, and we have already seen that he was recorded as a bachelor in the 1871 census.

Hmm. 1872 is still before they supposedly married in 1874. I suppose they could have had children before they married. Thank you for confirming he had been a bachelor, anyway!

Transcribing is an art to be sure and experience adds to good intentions. Perhaps the 1871 census records are not so much missing as difficult to decipher!

Thomas Edward Neale, b 1849 St. Luke, Finsbury He married in 1871 (Eliza) so may or may not be married at the time of the census.

Is this the marriage in Marylebone, Q1 1871? If so he married Mary Harding on 19 March. Occupation engineer. Father Thomas, a boot or shoe maker. Address 41 Great Castle Street
