Workhouse - George Robert Charlton - morpeth Northumberland
« on: Saturday 05 January 19 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi wondering if anyone can advise?

I believe my grandfather George Robert Charlton 1824-1997 was born in morpeth workhouse in Northumberland, Also possibly one of his brothers. is there anywhere I can search workhouse records?

He was Born with infant paralysis (polio??) and no hip on one side. He has to have a special boot and brace on his leg due to this. I think he also traveled to a workhouse to pay for treatments

Parents
Norman Edward Charlton 1868-1951
Ellen Diston 1894-1954 (3rd wife!)

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

For info see: http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Morpeth/

Describes the workhouse before Poor Law Unions (1834) and afterwards.

N.B. A note at the bottom of the page says:
Virtually no local records survive — holdings comprise Guardians' minutes (1902-5); Ledger (1923-30).

I believe my grandfather George Robert Charlton 1824-1997 was born in morpeth workhouse in Northumberland,

Presumably you mean 1924  not 1824  :D

His birth certificate should clarify exactly where he was born.

He was Born with infant paralysis (polio??)

That would be Infantile Paralysis/Poliomyelitis which is an infectious disease.

There are 5 Charlton/Diston births registered Morpeth 1920-1930 but no George.

There are possible twins registered May 1925 - one has a name the other one has "Male" - might that be George?  See Free BMD birth index  :)
