What a tragic story about the twins, it hardly bears thinking about. Thanks bbart for posting it.

I also suspect Norman and Ellen weren't married.

Just to conclude I received my grandads birth cert.

He was born 37 crossgate Durham which was a workhouse.

Residence address for his mother Ellen Diston, domestic servant was 103 franwellgate Durham which was a school

No father on certificate.

I'm guessing this may be as my grandad was born with Infant pralasis and no left hip, no father named so she could get help with treatments needed.

But my grandad did go by the name George Robert Charlton throughout his life.

Thanks x

The 1939 register is available on FindMyPast and Ancestry.

You can search it on FindMyPast without having a subscription. You need a sub. to see the image and get the full transcribed entry, but you can use the search without a sub to get quite a lot of information.

You need to use the 'Advanced' search.

As an example of how to use it, first search for George Charlton born 23 January 1924. This brings up one result and shows that there is also a Norman Charlton in the household, which is in Morpeth M.B.

Now do a new search. Just enter the surname Charlton in the name box, select Morpeth M.B. in the Borough/District box, and enter the name Norman Charlton in the 'Other household member' boxes at the bottom of the page. Leave everything else blank.

The result will give you all the folks named Charlton in the same household their years of birth. There record which is closed.

As I said before, you will need a full subscription to see the original page, which contains dates of birth for everyone and occupations. We aren't allowed to do look-ups.
