Birth Certificate in Spain. Trying to confirm name
« on: Sunday 06 January 19 05:11 GMT (UK) »
My 4th great grandpa, Benito Toral y Alvarez and his brother, Enrique Toral y Alvarez came from Spain to the Philippines in the late 1880s/very early 1900s.

In the 1877 record and other census records, Benito is not showing up anywhere and I'm thinking that's a middle name.

For example, Enrique is there and I think Consuelo is Benito but I need a birth certificate to confirm. Can anyone help please?

It says they were at La Coruna, Spain

The family is
Domingo  (49)  Father
Rita (37)  Mother
Antonio  (14)
Enrique  (12)
Consuelo  (10)
Adelina  (7)
César  (2)
Antonio  (39)  Rita's widowed brother

Consuelo is a girl's name.
Children didn't (and don't) usually have middle names unless it was José Maria, María Rosa or something similar.

Have you seen this, which suggests he was not born in La Coruña?

Yah, it's definitely not Consuelo although it matches the year of birth. I found all the children's birth certificate born before 1871.

I'm not sure I trust the geni site but if it holds true, I gotta look into it.
All I know out of all the children, A lot of family members have been named Cesar if its names after him.

just make a note of this just in case - its possible the surname was

Toral Y Alvarez Gamero ?? maybe when they moved the Gamero was dropped

I know this is 1686 - 200 years earlier but born in Espana and it may have been the original family name

Dad is Domingo Toral de Pena, mum is Rita Álvarez Sanchez.
Their children are all called XXX Toral Álvarez.
This is the Spanish way of giving surnames - dad's first + mum's first surname.

The link is for another Domingo Toral, married to Maria Gamero - unless the Domingo we are interested in married twice?
I can't see from that page where the Álvarez comes from.   ???

Unfortunately, Spain is a bit like Ireland in that there is no central register.
Unless you know which town the child was born/baptized in, you aren't going to find a certificate.   :(
Do you know at least the year in which Benito was presumably born?

I see Enrique (married) on the 1889 census, living next door to the parents Domingo and Rita, who have a couple more children, Luis and Leopoldo.  Still no Benito.

Is it possible at all that Benito was a bit older and went to the Philippines on his own earlier?

Maybe this gives clues from family stories. I think his grave says 1868
