How can I be a match to a person then not?

This has happened a few times.  A third cousin came back as a match, which I personally know to be right, but when I look at their profile Ancestry tells me we are not DNA linked. We have both been tested.
    Same results with other not known 3rd cousins. 
  Any thoughts?

Have you uploaded the DNA results to other sites?

My Heritage, FTDNA and Gedmatch all accept data from Ancestry tests.

Have you now done a test, given that you mentioned that you don't link through DNA?

I don't know anything about DNA but did wonder the same i.e. I assumed it to have been through a paper trail

It's a match on the results page but not on their profile page.
   
     Some results are frustrating as people have not uploaded results to trees so I thought if I could see their profiles on ancestry I would have hopefully some information about them. Long shot I know.

      On their profile page it states that we are not a DNA match

    Yes I have had my DNA tested, results came through New Years Day from Ancestry.

    The cousin in question is solid as a family member. Just thought it odd.

I think you just need to leave it a bit longer, to allow time for all that information to be processed.

When you click on 4-6 cousins or closer or All DNA matches on the DNA main page and you get a list of matches up, have you clicked on View Match on the right had part of his listing?  That should give you a page which just refers to him.

Also how much shared DNA does it show?  This should come up on the main listing,in the details  below his name - something like:

Possible range: 2nd - 3rd cousins

Confidence: Extremely High 

Shared DNA: 292 cM across 18 segments
