Search using marriage witness names?
« on: Sunday 06 January 19 12:05 GMT (UK) »
On the wonderful Lancashire site there is a search index where you can input witness names.

Is there anything similar for Yorkshire records does anyone know please?

Getting desperate to find someone and trying to think outside the normal avenues.

Thank you

Don't think so, sadly. I'm a great fan of the Lancs Parish Clerks online site, there's really nothing like it.... only wish that there were similar sites for ( deep breath) Cumberland, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and then I might not spend so much time feeling frustrated....

Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

FreeREG which is work in progress has a facility where you can search by marriage witness but it is still hit and miss as a lot of the FreeREG records are from transcriptions/BT's rather than original PR's. Witnesses to marriages started in 1754, and sadly BT's from that date onwards omitted witness names, they just put names and dates.

I agree, getting witnesses to marriages 1754 onwards is fundamental. Tracing them has often helped me crack down brickwalls. Sometimes they were regular witnesses to weddings.
