Curiosity is getting the better of me.
« on: Monday 07 January 19 09:41 GMT (UK) »
As it stands at present, I was told some years ago that I have an uncle who was born in Aberdeen, post 1912, who moved to New Zealand, South Island. As he is/was my father’s brother, I know the surname, but not the forename. The dates that my grandparents had children started in 1912 and went through to 1934. If I find the forename from the Aberdeen registrars, what are the chances of getting more information from the New Zealand records? Will it be worth dealing with this or will I hit a brick wall?

Thanks

Malky

Hi Malky,

The first place to start once you have the name will be a search of NZ BDM to see if he is deceased.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

Unfortunately, if the individual is still alive you won't be able to post the name, and we will not be able to assist, other than to give general advice to help your search.

If he is deceased you can post the name, then we can help you find where he is buried and build up his life story a bit more, etc.

Hope this helps,

Spades

I think you have a reasonable chance, although Scots names do tend to be a bit samish... :) and there are a fair few here.

If you have an idea of occupation it would probably help, and also an exact date of birth.

Using myself as an example. I’m on 1 shipping list on Ancestry, the NZ naturalisation index, and electoral rolls to 1980.   On Family Search I’m on another four shipping lists.  Some have more Information than others,

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/location/1927083?region=New%20Zealand

Nz BDMs if he married here won’t show as too recent, but if he has died it will be indexed with his date of birth

https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz

Depending on when he came, many  newspapers have been scanned and are free to search generally up to about 1947.

Then there are things  like the companies register. (I’m on that too!)

https://companies-register.companiesoffice.govt.nz

https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz    I haven’t graduated to archive status yet lol,  but my father who might be similar vintage to your uncle certainly is.

Slight twist. The son (my Uncle) who I thought, may have been the one who went to New Zealand, did not. He died at 7 months old. I will just have to keep digging.
