Elliott-Help with Valuation House Book Entry
« on: Monday 07 January 19 17:13 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm researching a book on Irish immigrants and for the Valuation Office House Book entry for George Elliott, Drumcashell, I need some help deciphering the explanatory notes the field researcher used.  Might somebody be able to help me to decrypt his symbols, etc.?  Image attached.  Thanks!

I think the manuscript note says something along the lines of:

“There is a difference in the return of House W making it 17/7 less than I, there is a new office not measured by 2nd land office added by me.”

An office is an outbuilding.

So what the valuer is saying is that he has adjusted the valuation downwards by 17 shillings and 7 pence.

Thanks so much for the quick reply, Elwyn.  So you think the text/symbol after "less than" is a "1" and the text/symbol after "not measured by" is "2d"?  That's very helpful.

The 1 might be a T. The text after “not measured by” might be 2nd rather than 2d. But am not 100% certain. Others viewing this might have a different interpretation. If so, please chip in.

But the overall sense of the notes seem to me to imply a minor change to the valuation of the property.
