County: Yorkshire. William Rhodes/Mary Ann Walton

I am trying to find the parents of Mary Ann Walton who is listed as granddaughter on the 1851 England Census for William Rhodes.  The only daughter listed is Jane Rhodes 16yo who according to the census is married to Dennis the 10yo son of William Rhodes??  Most likely she isn't the mother of Mary Ann Walton.

There is another census from 1841 showing William Rhodes with an 18yo daughter Sarah and I am trying to find out if Sarah married a Walton and is the mother of Mary Ann.

Jane Rhodes, 16 ("son's wife") is surely the wife of Edward (20), not 10 yr old Dennis. See her occupation - Edward is a sawyer and below that Jane's occupation is dittoed as sawyer's wife.

1851 census reference is HO107/2295/78/9

Birth registration is as Mary Ann Walton, mother's maiden name Rhodes, Mar qtr 1847 Huddersfield.

Christiana Sarah Ann Hawkyard Rhodes, 22, married John Walton, 22, at Huddersfield parish church on 29 November 1845.

Her father: William Rhodes, shoemaker.
His father: George Walton, gentleman.

Witnesses: Edward Whitworth; Sarah Whitworth.

She was baptised 26 December 1823 at Huddersfield parish church.

Parents: William Rhodes (shoemaker) and Mary Ann, of Newtown.

I see that the William Rhodes you have found in 1851 is a "beerhouse keeper late cordwainer" so consistent with the shoemaker occupation.

Thank you so much.  I think the first thing that threw me off was that the 1851 census had Edward's age as 70 so I didn't think he married Jane.  I should have double checked his age because in looking now, I see on the 1841 census that Edward was 11yo. 

You don't know how much I appreciate finding who Mary Ann belonged to.  I will need to print off what you found for me so that I can chart them all and be sure it does match up to the Mary Ann that I think belongs to my family.

It may take a couple of days before I check back in here, but I definitely will let you know if you have broken down the brick wall I have been against for at least 10 years!

You’re welcome.  I think one can forgive the transcriber for reading the digits of Edward’s age as 70 rather than 20 in the first instance, but they seem to have missed a common-sense check (given that he’s enumerated as a son of the 48-yr old William Rhodes who is the head of household)
