Shared Matches, maybe I just don't understand!

Three months ago I received my DNA results and have had some success finding cousins etc.  I thought I would ask my sister to take a test too and we have just received her results.

Her results are just as I would expect.  Shared DNA: 2,689 cM across 69 segments.

I then compared our Shared Matches.  I can see that quite a few of mine do not appear as shared matches on her results.

I thought as we are so close relations, sisters, our shared matches would be very similar. 

I don't think I understand.  Can anyone shed some light please?

You both inherit half of your dna from each parent but you don't, necessarily, inherit the same halves or you'd be identical twins.

If you upload the data to Gedmatch or My Heritage, you'll be able to see the shared segments of each chromosome.

Yes of course, now you say that, it's obvious, I didn't realise it would make such an immediate difference to our matches. 

Her ethnicity is quite different too. 

Anyway it's given me the ability to pursue to my quest to find the origin of our Grandmother further, which is great.

Yes I plan to upload my sister's raw data to Gedmatch, that will be very interesting.

My niece has just had her results in today - we share 1846 over 75.  Her son and I share 1100 over 49.  I'm giving her info about how to interpret.

It's fascinating. At times like this, I do wish my sister was still with us, She'd have loved it all. We started doing our family history together when I was 8 and she was 15  :)

I'm still intrigued by my single digit percentage that might be Greek or Albanian.

On a totally different topic I was thinking today about shared matches. During the war a good way of getting shot, was if you  shared a match with two or three fellow soldiers in a trench for lighting cigarettes. It gave the enemy a chance to draw a bead on you. These days we are using a different sort of shared matches to find those same relatives.

I'm feeling profound today.
