Chemist & Veterinary Chemist
« on: Tuesday 08 January 19 01:20 GMT (UK) »
What did the occupations of "chemist"  and "veterinary chemist" actually DO?  One ancestor, George William BIRKETT is described as a "chemist" when he took an apprentice in 1802.  His son, William BIRKETT (b. 1795, St. Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire  d. July, 1863 in Cambridge) was a "veterinary chemist".  I haven't been able to find out what exactly they might have done.

Thanks.

Well, I would say they both made up lotions and potions such as you imagine but the former just for humans while the latter made them up for animals.

And in that era I'd assume it was mainly for livestock and horses.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

Have you seen the report of the inquest into Williams death?

He was found “insensible” on the train from London to Cambridge, and taken to Cambridge hospital where he died.
Address the same as in the advertisement.

If you look at newspapers and just put in “veterinary chemist” there are some wonderful advertisements all about sheepdip! And tar lotion for scabies and the like.

My ancestor, William Youatt 1776-1847, was a vet. He was one of the founders of the Royal College of Veterinarians and wrote textbooks that I believe are still in use today.
