U.S.D on birth certificate ??
« on: Tuesday 08 January 19 05:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
My Grandfather born 1882, Newhaven, Sussex. On his b.c place of birth is U.S.D which I understand stand's for URBAN SANITARY DISTRICT. I'm curious as to where and what this mean's. Regards JUST J.

Shows no more from this than that U.S.D covers the area. Would I be right to think I'm suspecting that his birth was in a workhouse environment of some kind ?

is there no address other than that?

Usually, even if workhouse, they put the street address or something. (well ones I've seen anyway)

Not at all. These were just the forerunnners of Urban Districts. Any birth in the area could be so described.
Skelcey (Skelsey Skelcy Skeley Shelsey Kelcy Skelcher) - Warks, Yorks, Lancs
Hancox - Warks
Green - Warks
Draper - Warks
Lynes - Warks
Hudson - Warks
Morris - Denbs Mont Salop
Davies - Cheshire, North Wales
Fellowes - Cheshire, Denbighshire
Owens - Cheshire/North Wales
Hicks - Cornwall
Lloyd and Jones (Mont)
Rhys/Rees (Mont)

Also, from the start of Civil Registration, many Registration Districts were described as "xxxxx Union".
That's because Registration Districts were originally based on existing Poor Law Unions.

Again seeing this on a birth certificate does not indicate a workhouse birth ;D
