Mother's maiden name from 1837, birth registrations
« on: Tuesday 08 January 19 07:54 GMT (UK) »
Not strictly DNA related, but helpful.

GRO for sometime have offered mother's maiden name and age at death for birth and death registrations beginning 1837, as you probably know.

GRO is helpful, but has restrictions - search for male or female within a 5 year span. This can be quite time consuming, especially if you don't know the name or specific time frame.  And before 1911 census, there is no indication of any 'missing' siblings.

Findmypast now offer the same service - incomplete in some cases, presumably they are working on it.

You can search any sex, any year, just as you would for any other record and it will also pick up alternative spellings.

Very useful, gives a rounder picture and fills in where there are apparently large gaps in children's ages in census.

I have already found some unexpected results
