Joe Stamper
« on: Tuesday 08 January 19 17:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone have any connections to Joe Stamper, who was born around 1886 in St Helens? He wrote a book about his childhood called 'So long ago.' I am distantly related by marriage.

Have you checked the Surname Interests Board - link at bottom of page under Tools

Birth reg shows him as Joseph Thomas b Dec qtr 1886 mmn was Evans.  Joseph Stamper married Mary Anne Evans in Liverpool 1878 per freebmd

Are you just looking to connect with other descendants etc?

Hello CaroleW

Thank you for your reply. I am really just wondering if anyone has any connection with him. I tried 'search,' with little result. There are Stampers in surnames interests, but they are not specific.

His sister, Mary Ann ('Dolly') married my Grandfather's cousin, Joseph Hodgson Fairhurst. I have quite a lot of information about both these families, Hodgsons and Fairhursts. My Grandfather's mother was a Hodgson. I have found the family in a few censuses. In the 1939 register Joe says his occupation is 'writer of serial fiction.' There are two household members redacted, so there may be descendants. His book (one of several, i think) was an account of his childhood in St Helens in the 1890s. He is a lively writer, so it is a good read, although grim in parts. I thought , with him being a published author, someone may have researched him or have family stories etc.

Thank you for your interest.

Married 1912 in Leicester to Margaret A Butler died 1974 Gloucester

Quite a few Stamper/Butler births of which only one is in Leics and all others in Barrow in Furness.  There was another Stamper/Butler marriage in Wigan in 1913 so difficult to say whether any were theirs

Thanks. Yes, it is an uncommon name, but there seem to be clutches around St Helens/Liverpool, and Barrow. Joe traveled around a lot according to censuses. He also claimed in another book to be a tramp, although he does appear in censuses so was not homeless at those times. I have also found other possible marriages after Margaret's death, in St Helens , and Cockermouth. A bit of a wanderer I think.

Margaret was born December 1891  I think she was born in Barrow

Margaret Ann Butler March qtr 1892 Barrow in Furness  8e 819

So that would mean they had one child in Leics in 1914 (Leslie) and 5 others in Barrow between 1916 - 1932

George Stamper born and died 1916 Barrow
Eric Stanley Stamper b 17.8.1927 died Berkshire 8.5.1989
Leslie Stamper b 17.3.1914 died 1999 Devon

The Stamper marriages in St Helens and Cockermouth are different people.  St Helens was Joseph S Stamper probably b 1920 Prescot RD

Cockermouth - 2 marriages -  Joseph  and Joseph W not Joseph T.

Thank you, Carole.
So his timeline looks like this:

1886      Born         St Helens
1891      Census         Hamer St, St Helens
               Margaret Ann Butler born, Barrow
1901      Census         Hamer St, St Helens
1911      Census         Working at tinworks, Llanglwg, Glamorgan
1912      Married      Margaret Ann Butler, Leicester
1914      Leslie born      Leicester
1916      George born and died   Barrow, (now) Cumbria
1921      Marianne born      Barrow
1927      Eric born      Barrow
1931      Gladys born      Barrow
1933      John born      Barrow
1939      Register      Hayes, Middlesex. Writer
1950      Margaret Ann died   Nottingham
1974      Died         Kingswood, Gloucestershire

He got about a lot1 And all those children probably means some descendants, but possibly not on RC. But if anyone has anything else to add, it would be interesting, and I am happy to share info on Hodgsons and others.

He is my great-grandfather. His son Leslie moved to Dartmouth (S Devon) where I was born
