Dating a picture/painting
« on: Wednesday 09 January 19 17:46 GMT (UK) »
I considered posting this on the photo restoration board but was unsure so will not be offended if it's moved there!
This image has recently come into my possession. It has potential links to the area some of my ancestors lived. There is some information on the obverse but I am not sharing that for now. I am interested in opinions on possible dates, clothing & painting style etc. Any clues to it's likely origins or other comment welcome :)

I feel it is a small part of a much bigger painting, can’t bring it to mind.
But is it a painting or a photograph? I can not see any colour other than browns and sepias.
Could it be an advertisement?
It was still considered O.K to use such images into the twentieth century!

Looks like this one for sale (Baxter print) -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Baxter-Print-Black-Framed-Mounted/dp/B000T2D9FM

It was printed mainly for the American market about the time of the Great Exhibition in New York in 1853, where George Baxter 1806-1867 had a stall for the sale of his prints.

Wow JJen, that was phenomenally quick response! Thank you so much, and as I suspected, not what it was purported to be. According to my brief research the original print dates from 1853  but this particular image was commonly forged; this is probably one of those I reckon.
I have attached an image of the writing on the obverse, not sure exactly when it was written but the writer died in 1960. The Sambo referred to is buried at Sunderland Point in Lancashire, a well known visitor attraction, plenty online if anyone is interested.
It was inspected by a museum in the 1990s and their opinion was that it dated from around 1900, certainly more accurate than the original assessment!

I live very near Sunderland Point and Sambo was buried in 1736. This sounds a bit like sailors spinning a yarn.

What a wonderful artifact! Just goes to show how you cannot trust treasured oral history and family stories. "Brought from overton about 100 years ago with in a warming pan". Priceless!!

But do the supposed movements of the picture match the movements of the Bland family? Does the story have some solid family history behind it? Greenwood and Gardner presumably existed.
