In which Parish does John Bowker live?
« on: Wednesday 09 January 19 23:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi Lancastrians

This has me stumped. Tried the Genuki Gazetter but no luck.  John Bowker of the Parish of ??? Moor.
This a Manchester marriage record from 1803. Hope some can help.
Thanks.

I'm not convinced that the 2 letters preceding "Moor" are "of". I think they are last letters of the first word. Possibly e and y.
Which church was the marriage?

Edit. If you don't get an answer have a rootle around this website.

Might the word which looks like "Moor" be an abbreviation for Manchester? Ran out of space at the end of the line? Squiggle after "parish" might be "&".
Is it "John Bowker of this parish &  ____ of Manchester"?
"Manchr" is on line below as well as part of bride's abode.

If you look at the other entries on the pages of the register, they appear to have the same comment.  I believe it says "& Town of Mcr", some of the others are in more detail and spell Manchester in full, or "Manch".
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Hi Maiden Stone and BumbleB

Thanks for the clarification. Since the Record was for Manchester Cathedral I read the "this Parish" as the Parish because I was expecting it to be a different Parish from Manchester. But I agree with your interpretation.
Thanks to both of you from setting me straight.
Sincerely

O and P.S. to Maiden Stone
Thank you for the link to Salford Hundred information. That is very useful. I was born in Manchester but never lived there. I have a couple of Salford families that I'm stuck on so I'll have a good look round that site.
Cheers

Some letters of "this" may be partly worn away. I peered at the extract 3 or 4 times and changed my mind each time, hence deleted post. I couldn't make out the word after parish.

You must have lived there for your first few hours at least.  ;D
