Michael Darmody (father) John Darmody (son)
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 03:50 GMT (UK) »
Trying to trace the history of some of my wife's ancestors. Michael Darmody was born in Tipperary in 1810 and his son John was born in Tipperary in 1833 and both emigrated to Australia in 1840 on board the "Birman".
We are planning a possible trip to Ireland for next year and would love to get any/more information on the forbears.
Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,
I just found their ship record.
http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/BSA/1840Birman.gif
There are 31 Darmody in the Tithe records but only one Michl (Michael) Darmody.
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=darmody&firstname=mich*&county=Tipperary&parish=&townland=&search=Search

this is a Clonakenny map.
https://www.townlands.ie/tipperary/ikerrin/bourney/bourney-west/clonakenny/

Have you any other bits of info.?

Many thanks Maggsie.

Exactly what we needed to find out. Unfortunately we have no other information on this family in Ireland.
All we need now is to find the other side of the Great, Great, Grandparents. Can't even find when they arrived in Australia but with a surname of Gillick we're pretty sure that they originated in Ireland.
Thanks again.

Hi,
GILLICK?
I checked they are mainly in County Cavan, County Meath and County Westmeath.
Christians if any would help.

Bournea and Corbally  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0766  IF they were RC. and IF this Michael in Clonakenny is your Michael

They only start 1836 Michael, wife and 4 children emigrated to Australia in 1840 on board the "Birman"......
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Hi Maggsie

Yes after a couple more enquiries it appears that Patrick Gillick left County Cavan in 1843 at age 21 and moved to Australia. We have all the full details of family after his arrival here just now need to find out exactly where in Cavan he came from. We'll press on.

Thanks

What's the name of the wife and other children? Were any of the other children younger, and more likely to appear in records then?
