Land in Seventeenth century Cavan
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 17:48 GMT (UK) »
I have tracked the Magrath family back to around 1700 in Cavan and got stuck. BUT. I see they had land with names like Derryvackney, Killeshandra, Drumlane, Rafian, Swilland.
I also see that 1648 and after around Killeshandra was fairly bloody and land was at the centre of it.
Any tips please on researching this? It occurs to me that following the land exchanges/leases might lead me to the family.  In know that people in general weren't necessarily recorded, but I guess land was?? ::)

Yes, Land/Property is well recorded, there is a link to Wills/Deeds in  Ireland Resources    folder.

You would need to know who they were leasing from..... or if they had Land to Lease

There is also a list of Townlands too that can be searched.

Have you looked for them in Tithes or Griffith's Valuations?

Wills/Deeds only start 1708 but worth checking early ones for transfers etc to sons following a Death etc

Pretty sure the main landlord around Killeshandra in those times were the Hamiltons. Castle Hamilton grounds still survive in the town. It was indeed a bloody time.

Here a nice story from the 1641 rebellion in the town!

btw - As someone from the area originally, there is only one McGrath family in Killeshandra area today who may or may not be descendants of who you are looking for.
