Help with this surname please
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 18:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'd really appreciate some help deciphering this surname on the 1901 census - 4th one down, first name Virginia. I believe she's my great-grandmother, who came from Malta.
It's been variously transcribed as Gremer or Grimer, but I'm not convinced - neither of these seem to be Maltese surnames and I can't find any other trace of her.
Thanks in advance
Marchant
Wragg
Tilley
Mousley

Grimes?  Being born Malta doesn't mean that's where her family came from.  Perhaps her father was in the military.

I thought Grimes when I first saw it as well - the surname of my grandmother's first husband

Welcome from me too :)

Is she the Virginia Grimes (37) who sailed to New York on the Majestic from Southampton, 20 Aug 1913?

Not quite a match on age, though.

Thanks for your replies. Jane, family story is that she didn't speak English, but it could be Grimes. Although it looks to me like an 's' in the middle.

avm228 - yes, she had children with Edward Marchant (my great grandfather) & is shown as Virginia Marchant in the 1939 Register, but I haven't been able to find any evidence of a marriage or registration of births of their children (Albert Edward, & Frank & John, I think). She is the Virginia Carmela Marchant who died in 1947.
Can I ask how you knew about the connection with Edward?

I happened upon what may be your online tree :)

I see that their son? Frank Charles Marchant born 18 June 1908 gave his birthplace as Malta on his 1929 merchant seaman’s card, which would explain why there is no English birth registration for him.  Were the other sons also born in Malta, so far as you know?

Does she appear on the 1911 census in England - that might give clarify her surname if she was still single at that point.

In 1918 they are in Stepney.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos
