I know this isn’t her, but could her family name be GRIMA:

On FS there is a Joseph  Grimer born Malta in 1897. Both parents born in Malta. I suspect his name may be Grimaud as I think he may be on a later US census 1940, in that name.

There are also Maltese names being Gremar and Greamer. Malta is huge melange of names as it was a big melting pot of people moving there. Even now many of the residents are tri lingual and more - polyglot. I heard & met residents fluent in Arabic, English and French who preferred to watch Italian TV when visiting a few years ago!

Grimaud could also be spelt Grimault. To a non french speaking person someone saying either Grimaud or Grimault could sound like Grimer, Greamer, Greemer, Gremar.
Does this name get you any further?

Grimaud does have links to Prince Rainier and co.....Monaco.  Not to get your hopes up!

Thanks again everyone. Some really interesting ideas to follow up on. I'll try & look into them today & let you know if I get anywhere. I feel a trip to Malta, & even Monaco, might be on the cards!

Interesting suggestion, as Findmypast has a number of Grima records associated with Malta.  None for a Virginia (or Carmela) though.

I was going to suggest GRIMA as well.  I worked with a GRIMA once who was from a Maltese family.
