Marsh of Ely
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 19:43 GMT (UK) »
Hoping some people might be able to shed some light on my Marsh line.
I have as follows -

Frances Marsh
Bapt Nov 1763 Little Downham, Cambs
Married Thomas Collingwood 1789 Bluntisham cum Earith, Hunts
Dies 1833 Bluntisham cum Earith, Hunts

Daughter of (I think)
Thomas Marsh
Bapt 4 Apr 1742 Ely Trinity, Cambs
Married Frances Foreman 11 May 1762 Little Downham, Cambs
Died ?

Son of
William Marsh
bapt ? (Some people have him as born 1710 Haddenham, Cambs. Son of Ralph Marsh, Esq and wife Sarah but I think this William dies as an infant in 1712?)
Married Sarah Barrett/Barrell 1735 Ely, Cambs
Died 1748 Ely, Cambs?

There could be a possible link to the Marsh family who are buried in Ely Cathedral.
A William Marsh, Gent was buried there 1708 aged 66 and a Thomas Marsh, Gent was buried in 1720 aged 39.

Any help would be appreciated

Thank you very much for this Ciderdrinker.
I was told that according to Thomas's marriage to Frances in Little Downham he was 'Of Cottenham' but there is no evidence of any Marsh/Mash families in this village so I assume he just happened to have lived there or near there. Cottenham is only 12 miles from Ely and Little Downham and not far at all from Bluntisham. Little Downham is only 3 miles from Ely so Likely to have been born there. There are no other Thomas Marsh/Mash baptisms or marriages.

In 1688 a William Marsh/March Esq was one of the Commissioners for Cambridgeshire ,This is most likely the William Marsh who was buried in 1708.
There is a Monument in Ely Cathedral dedicated to William 1708 and his 2 Sons and wife of one of the sons.
There is a burial in Ely, Cambs 25 Jan 1644 for a William March, Esq.
A Mr William March, Gent marries Miss Mary Steward in Stuntney, Cambs 11 Jun 1635.
I know the Stewards were lords of the Manor of Stuntney and are also buried in Ely Cathedral. They also owned Oliver Cromwells house in Ely.

Ive found the March/Marsh family on the Visitation of Cambridgeshire.

I cant quite pin who William Marsh, Gent/Esq parents are. His mural states his birthdate is 1642.
I think He marries Elizabeth Fermour/Farmer 1662 Fen Ditton, Cambs (Near Bluntisham) Their first son Thomas is baptised there and William is listed as 'William March, Esq'
The pedigree lists a William March/Marsh who was born 1631 son of Humberstone March, Esq of Haddenham and Little Thetford, Cambs and Lettice daughter of Edmond Skipwith of Snore Hall, Norfolk. Haddenham and Little Thetford are close to Ely/Little Downham. I think this William dies in Haddenham 1700 as there is a mural to him in the church.

I think William might be a son of the  William March and Mrs Mary Steward mentioned in my other post. This William I think is the William listed as age 17 in 1619 and son of Christopher March, Gent 5th son of Robert March, Gent.

Edit* It seems the ages on Mural may be slightly off. Elizabeth Farmer/Fermour is likely the Elizabeth Farmer bapt in 1643 Sutton, Cambs to Thomas Farmer, Gent. Sutton is only a mile or 2 from Fen Ditton and makes more sense than her marrying at age 15.

There is a family tree for the  Haddenham branch of theMarch family in Charles Bester's " A Parish History of Haddenham , Isle of Ely" . According to his tree the William March who died in 1700 was childless and left his estate to his nephew Ralph. Ralph married Sarah Rowlands who had inherited a fortune from David Rowlands who owned Hinton Hall in Haddenham. According to the tree Ralph and Sarah had three children-William who died in 1710 aged 3 weeks, Thomas 1711-12 and Sarah who married Pell Gatward who died in 1741 and then Isaac Woolaston.

Later in the book Mr Bester mentions a William March who was a magistrate in 1670.There was a charity in Haddenham named after Elizabeth March wife of William. He claims she was born in Fulbourn in 1636 and was buried there when she died in 1722 aged 87.Apparently the charity paid to have the memorial stone at Fulbourn repaired in 1980 so I assume it is still there.

I haven't checked this information in the parish records . Mr Bester was parish clerk in Haddenham for many years.

Ah, This is the Ralph people have as the father of William but this is obviously incorrect.
I'm starting to wonder if the Marsh family is a different family from the March family.
I cant find a baptism for William Marsh, Gent 1642-1708

HI
Just in case you haven't got it
London Apprenticeship
Marsh Edward son of William, Ely, Cambridgeshire, grocer to Edward Agar 11 Jul 1704, Grocers' Company

So they do seem to get quite far afield.

The nearest baptism I can see for a William Marsh 1642-1708 is this at Sawston

William s of William and Joane Marsh 14.11.1640

I can't see a marriage for the couple.
