Somebody should compile all these useful tips, hints and advice into a single document. Perhaps I'll do it myself when I've found my three remaining great great grandparents.

Martin

I started but got side tracked by new matches  :-\

Not expecting it any time soon then, Martin!

I do have a list of useful DNA links to refer to, I'll start a new topic

We should call you St Margaret but you would probably be confused with the station between Richmond and Twickenham.

For comparison.

Several descendants of my 2G grandparents have had DNA testing.

Out of the 3rd cousins, one shares 6.2 cM across 1 segment, nearly off the radar.
One shares 63 cMs across 3 segments
Another shares 153 across 7, the only one predicted by ancestry to be a 3rd cousin.

The next generations, 3rd cousins once or twice removed, share 34/3, 28/2, 17/1 etc.

Any children of the first mentioned match, 6.2/1, who are also 3rd cousins once removed, will share little or no DNA with me.

Another match this morning from the same line as previous post, who is a 3rd cousin twice removed, 58 cMs across 4 segments.

My cousin shares no DNA at all with him. So the DNA has disappeared entirely within relatively few generations, much less than 6th cousins.

GEDmatch still processing but I've got several hundreds of matches already .... can't believe I've got so many relatives.

According to information at Ancestry the probability of a shared match with a 6th cousin is only 11%.

This is in a pop-up window so I can’t give a direct link, but if you go to the Ancestry DNA home page then click on the ? symbol at the top right hand corner of the DNA matches box then choose Should other family members get tested? you can find this in Table 1. Table 2 is also very useful.

Have had message from my 6th cousin, he's not surprised we don't match either. But he is a match for my 1C1R with same surname, and he can see I'm at the top of that cousin's list, so that is reassuring.
